James is a partner, a Legal 500 Recommended lawyer for Dispute Resolution, and a qualified Solicitor-Advocate, which enables him to represent clients as an advocate in the Higher Courts of England and Wales.
As a commercial litigator he often advises Directors, Partners and Members, as well as stakeholders. James also specialises in private client/ contentious trust disputes and property litigation and has acted for beneficiaries, Trustees and HNW clients with estates involving assets of over £20m. James has acted for beneficiaries, Trustees and Executors. James has extensive property litigation experience, including resulting trust disputes, Landlord and Tenant Act issues, and all manner of proprietary claims. James specialises in both commercial and residential property disputes, handling matters at Court and property tribunals.
Having been Recommended by The Legal 500 (2009) for his work on financial disputes in divorce cases, which referred to: ‘client favourite James Freemantle, whose knowledge of international maintenance matters is first rate’, James is also able to handle any such related issues. James is equally recognised for his work in regulation, risk and compliance, particularly the niche field of solicitors’ regulatory matters, having been again Recommended by The Legal 500 in their 2012 – 2016 editions for Professional Discipline within Dispute Resolution. Prior to his work at Bircham Dyson Bell, James was a partner and the Head of the Dispute Resolution department of Lincoln’s Inn firm Ambrose Appelbe Solicitors, which merged with Bircham Dyson Bell in 2014. Before this, James worked in the litigation department of the largest estate agency in London, alongside General Counsel, and still acts for Estate Agents on litigious and commercial matters. Prior to this, James initially commenced training as a chartered accountant at a London firm of accountants, which experience proved invaluable on his move to become a commercial litigator.
In his spare time, James supports charitable endeavours, abseiling 350ft down the Union Jack Club building for the National Children’s charity for the firm, running the 2012 London Marathon for the British Heart Foundation, as well as being an Editor and Contributor to The Private Library, the journal of the Private Libraries Association charity. James is a keen golfer and skier, as well as being a PADI Master Scuba Diver, and RYA Day Skipper.
